Dr. King was born Michael Luther King in Atlanta on Jan. 15, 1929 — one of the three children of Martin Luther King Sr., pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church, and Alberta (Williams) King, a former schoolteacher. (He was renamed “Martin” when he was about six years old). Dr. King was a Baptist minister and social activist who led the American civil rights movement in the mid-1950s – 1968 until his untimely death. His most famous work is his “I Have a Dream” (1963) speech, in which he spoke of his dream of the United States that is void of segregation and racism, one with greater unity and peace.  Dr. King rose to national prominence as head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which promoted nonviolent tactics, such as the massive March on Washington (1963), to achieve civil rights.  His leadership was fundamental to the movement’s success in ending the legal segregation of African Americans in the South and other parts of the United States. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. We are proud to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy as part of the icon collection.
